Hi Pierre. I have an 89 300SE and I have a fluttering oil pressure gauge when the engine is warm and at idle. The car has 125k miles. I use Liqui Moly 10/40 oil. The car runs great besides this issue. Today, that fluttering went almost to 0 oil pressure but as soon as I left a traffic light, it goes to max bars. The valve train is quiet but I do hear this low low pitch noise that oscillates. Only hear at idle. Changed all pulleys on the car. No dice. The oil level presently is maybe a half a quart down but it’s got 4000 miles on this oil change. I’m using a factory oil filter. Can a chain tensioner cause this issue? Can a bad bypass valve cause this? I am at my whits end on this. I put a 100 miles a day on this car typically driving 80. It’s when I get off the freeway that the acrobatic oil gauge shows me it’s latest moves. Thanks in advance for any input.

Well pierre, i see it as lego for adults, i used to glue modelairplanes together when i was 10…then u could paint them afterwards…i draw some spontanious analogies, when im busy thinkering, solving, thinking out of the box…i even started to weld…why not do it in the flesh? Hands on😅

Meeting my partner was a watershed moment. Having my partner refuse to talk me out of an abused $600 1984 300TD was almost/just as/more(?) life changing. That self propelled shambles sparked a streak of self confidence that saw me remodel and sell my old house. If there was a job the contractor did that I wasn't happy with, I could find him in the nearest mirror. Not too long (ok, a decade) before, 20 year old me gave up on my first mercedes, a W124 wagon I didn't have the sense, aptitude, or wherewithal to deal with. Ten years later in 2019, I found myself at the wedding of one of my dearest friends, and three of the four sub $1000 Mercedes I had were present in active service at that wedding. Now I'm a handyman / shade tree mechanic with an unflappable attitude of "I can fix that." Oh, and also, I have an old Mercedes habit. The other steps of recovery are at this point unwelcome. I have a support group. If I do anything to make our 1983 240D go away, my kids will probably smother me in my sleep.

Old cars are indeed excellent for one's mental health.

    Let's hope you're right Pierre. Because I just bought a Euro 1988 300SEL. (engine 103.981) 😉

"Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance": why I ride – exclusively- Airhead (BMW) motorcycles (my E300TD also affords me great peace of mind)… if only Mercedes Benz built motorcycles…
