Welcome to a well overdue Late Brake Show (Non-Tour) ‘Idol Chat’, where we rope an Idol of Jonny’s and/or an Idol to many, for a sit down chat in our tatty brown leather chairs.
For this next ‘Idol Chat’ – of which there are 2 parts, this is just Part 1 – we picked the windiest week of 2022, to drag the tatty chairs down to Kent and meet a multiple motorcycle race champion.
The world of cars and bikes is often segregated and tribal, but we believe there’s a lot of car folks – like us – who appreciate bikes/bike tech/bike racing/bike history, even if we don’t ride much/at all.
Cue Shane Byrne. Six time British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne. Incessant vehicle cleaner. Astonishing death avoider and ’80s Ford thrasher, Shane Byrne. An inexplicably talented rider and a constant smiler.
In Part 2 Shane shows us around his garage, packed full of amazing 2-wheeled heroes.

Totally agree with Shane regarding GCSE’s meaning nothing. I didn’t do great on paper and my brother didn’t even sit his GCSE’s and we are both commercial pilots and finished top of our prospective classes throughout training!
you often see racers retiring with injury, usually some shoulder complication or other, which is exactly how I thought shakey went out, didn't realise that his injury really was life changing, '' given the severity of the injuries I wouldn't even consider racing again!… I'm not a racer but have recently retired, and on a much lower level I get the life change issue but still !! I'd count my blessings and watch the kids grow up from a standing position!!!!!…..
That’s strange about hearing him describe his accident and the back end coming round being the worst possible way to enter….. as next level riders like Marquez and stoner deliberately lose the rear , in order to counter steer , which in effect reduces the degree of lean, and gives a few riders the feeling of being ‘safer’
I genuinely wouldn't know Shakey from Adam as i'm not into bikes, but it was still an enjoyable interview. It's always good to listen to someone talk about their life and passion.
Brlliant chat. Long time fan of Shakey and enjoyed every sec of this Late Brake Show. Shane puts the lie to the comment about never meeting ones heroes. His description of his injuries and his recovery, mental strength and enduring attitude are inspirational. Thank you Jonny.
Shakey is an amazing talent to watch race a bike especially in the bsb championship. I got the pleasure to be at brands when he took everyone by surprise to win the the championship in 2017.
He also has a fabulous way of story telling. It’s great listening to him talk about bike racing.
Get well soon Shakey!!!
Love Shakey love this channel, keep up the good work.
Top man shakey, 💪
