Everyone knows that “Motorcycle” is synonymous with “Freedom” … but why? Motorbikes have the same dynamics as bicycles and go to the same places as cars – what’s so free about that?
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:
Fair warning – this is a challenging read. Asking what makes freedom “free” is child’s play compared to Pirsig’s query: what makes good “good”? Fascinating!

I’ve been struggling to understand the whole “freedom and brotherhood” thing. I’ve been riding for about 12 years and all that I feel is enjoyment. I love riding but freedom doesn’t come to mind when I ride. I’ve tried to ride with groups but find them very restrictive and often more hazardous than riding alone. I wave to other bikers when waved to but I don’t feel a brotherhood with them. To me, I’m just acknowledging that they’re having fun too. When I ride it’s just me and my bike, everything else is just traffic.
