Over here, you drop back and some moron cuts in to the space you create.
John, by far the best safety video I have ever seen, wonderful job, it should be compulsory in NZ to view. My main point is space, because all to often some bastard wanrts to fill it, like you said they are not accidents it should be called suicide, then perhaps they will get the message. Love the videos
John i am a truckie. I love your reports and the last two on safety was your best yet. I dont know if you have spent much time in a 60 tonne plus vehicle. Its quite obvious that many of the car drivers around us have no idea what we are trying to achieve or the limits of our vehicles. Perhaps some insights on our limitations and why we do what we do could be some good advice.
Hi John thank you for the video. Not sure whether you have seen the following old road safety videos. A while back I was looking for defensive driving videos on YouTube and these were the best that I found:

AT 8:10 hands at 3 and 9 position, yes…but you don't have your thumbs inside the rim of the wheel, especially not hooked on it. In an emergency it can easily lead to breaking your thumbs…so put your thumbs ON the rim of the wheel…NEVER inside it !!!
everyone's out to kill you, is the mindset to have on the road.
Drive with care! Remember Everyone on the road is an idiot. At least once!
Edit: I did some more research on it after that. The main reason for the change from 10-2 to 9-3 is the steering-wheel airbag it seems.
Especially when you have a smaller car, in a 10-2 position, the cover of the airbag could break your thumbs and/or could send your hands flying into your face from the explosion.
Hello John, great video as always…
All very clearly explained and just pure logical I'd say. However, I disagree with the '15 past 9' hands on the steering wheel.
About 20 years ago that I got my license back in the Netherlands, but was taught 10 past 10 position. And most cars I've driven over the years, if not all, have a slight bulge on the inside of the steering wheel where your thumbs will rest on when using the 10 past 10 position (or 10 before 2, or 10 past 10).. Lets call it 10 – 2 (and 15 – 3)
There's several reasons for that:
– Most important one is that you have more leverage to move the steering wheel in a 10 – 2 position. Try moving the steering wheel at 15 – 3 position. You can only make a quarter turn before taking your hand off the steering wheel (and having your arm in your lap).
Now do the same in a 10 – 2 position and you can make the same turn while both hands remain comfortable on the steering wheel, leaving you in full control.
Aside from the wheel-travel without lifting your hands off the wheel, you have more leverage, more force available to move the steering wheel. It's a bit less relevant nowadays with all cars having power-steering, but there's situations where that extra leverage can be a life-saver.
– When turning your car, in a 10 – 2 position, you easily move 1 hand over the other (which stays on the steering wheel during turning), gripping the steering wheel again before moving your other hand. Added benefit, you move your free hand to same index position again. (So in a right turn: Keep left hand on the steering wheel. Move the wheel to the right. When your left hand is on the right side (2-position), you grab the wheel with your right hand at the 10 before 2 position, then keep turning and doing the same again.. you always end up with both hands at exactly the index positions again…
There's always the footpath or the verge, bad joke after what happened in NSW with those poor kids
A great presentation.
Maybe you could give some thought to psychological aspects of driving and accident reduction. How people can keep their cool when other drivers do stupid things. Give yourself plenty of time so you don't have to speed or cut through traffic. Checking routes in advance so you're not slow or indecisive on the road.
John, with your flair for language I'm sure it would be entertaining and informative. When you're on a roll I don't even need the Ming Molls to stay tuned in…however pleasant the pulchritude.
