‘Is lane splitting safe?’ or ‘Is lane splitting fair?’, friend, you are asking the wrong questions. This video dives into the philosophical disagreements that are at the heart of every lane splitting, filtering, and shoulder riding arguments we see time and time again.

While most discussions revolve around a few studies (Hurt Report, University of California Berkeley, New South Wales trail) there is no empirical data that can tell us definitively how dangerous these behaviors are. Instead you need to examine the key concepts around ‘Danger’ and ‘Fairness’, which is what we’ll do in this video.

After the discussion there are prescriptions for how to build a framework to legalized and safe lane splitting.

Someday lane splitting may be safer. For now drivers have not become accustom to motorcycles riding on the lines. If it is legal, over time drivers will learn and remember a bike could come by at anytime. However, if you look at speeding cars do it all the time with minimal risk compared to speeding while lane splitting. If all obeyed traffic laws then no problem, even with lane splitting or filtering. Until then , … then may never arrive 💀

Wow! You really let your inner nerd out with this vid. I hope you can write off that outfit. You do a great job of thoroughly stating this case. Maybe even a little too thorough for the general public. Perhaps you should seek out some law makers and present them with this argument.

Well done. Only x factor unaccounted for is the plain ole cussedness of people; their tendency to try to block or obstruct a rider, increasing the danger and unpredictability of splitting. That said, I support free choice, but personally don't trust cagers enough to try it myself.

Thank goodness lane splitting is legal in CA. I can't imagine how much longer it would take me to get to work if it wasn't.

I wish lane splitting was legal in Canada. 😭

It is a bit ironic that the same motorists that think it is too dangerous for a motorcycle to overtake in slow or stalled traffic have no problem with overtaking a bicycle that is in the same lane of traffic as they. The laws are skewed toward the majority that do not ride motorcycles.

Okay. I’m new to your channel. I just found this video… So, here in California where everything is illegal but “LANE SHARING”! Lane splitting is illegal because, splitting a lane is basically riding the yellow line(s)down the middle of two lanes going in the opposite directions! So yes it should not be done! I’ve had to share this with a CHP (California Highway Patrol) at work. Maybe I’m being literal but let’s be clear. Splitting is bad and sharing is caring. Otherwise what else do they call going between two vehicles when one of them is going in the opposite direction than you? Dangerous and illegal! If someone has the answer I sincerely would like to know. And I’ll shit down and shut up. So, far I’m enjoying your channel! PEACE!

I use to ride 50 miles one way so in an average work week 500 miles, in sunny Southern California. I lane share the whole way except on surface streets. Freeways are safer in my opinion. Everyone is going in the same direction at relatively the same speed. That being said. Lane sharing at 80 when everyone is doing 70 to 75 no big deal. It’s when there is a traffic jam you continue that speed between cars. Which is bad because everyone is trying to find that lane that is less effected by the jam. I’ve had people at least once every quarter, (3months) show their dislike of the advantage motorcyclists have in lane sharing. That’s why I go slow enough to scan head movements and mirror scans of the 4 wheeled folk. They sometimes broadcast their intentions like a poker tell. For example a guy mouthed watched this to all his buddies in the car, as he noticed me coming. Gripped the top of his steering wheel at the 12 o’clock with both hands, stared into his side mirror, and waited. He wasn’t really paying attention to the traffic in front, he closed that gap and had no room to come out far enough to effect me. I rode out far enough to avoid his attempt. This was on an on-ramp to a different freeway, so they have wide shoulders.
