‘Is lane splitting safe?’ or ‘Is lane splitting fair?’, friend, you are asking the wrong questions. This video dives into the philosophical disagreements that are at the heart of every lane splitting, filtering, and shoulder riding arguments we see time and time again.
While most discussions revolve around a few studies (Hurt Report, University of California Berkeley, New South Wales trail) there is no empirical data that can tell us definitively how dangerous these behaviors are. Instead you need to examine the key concepts around ‘Danger’ and ‘Fairness’, which is what we’ll do in this video.
After the discussion there are prescriptions for how to build a framework to legalized and safe lane splitting.

You lane split at your own risk. I don't trust car and truck drivers enough to put myself at needless risk. The fact that it's only "legal" in CA, supports my stance, since the other 99% of the country just watches what CA does, then does the opposite and remains normal. As far as I know, there is no mandated distance that cars and trucks are required to leave between them while remaining within their lanes, so what makes motorcyclists so sure they will leave enough distance between them for a lane splitting squid on a farkled-out Hayabusa with 6" frame sliders? It just pisses off the car and truck drivers around them and who wants that (see any car vs bike road rage video)? Stay in your lane, wait your turn and shut up. If Californians can't get to work on time, either move to a normal state or leave your home earlier. Not rocket science.
Being from California I thought that it was done everywhere. Well, no. I agree with your points. Great Vid. Stay safe.
It is legal in Australia so good esp on shitty highway traffic. In saying that I wouldn't give 2 fucks, I'd still lane split
what a great video
Can you please do a video addressing the 3 billion people that say, "Take it to the track". I say, "fuck you". A day at the track cost more than a speeding ticket. So I'm gonna ride the fuck out of these roads until tracks are free. 🤷♂️. Fuck them and their hurt feelings just because I passed them.
A fellow destiny viewer and motorcyclist… Welcome to the club I guess…
I just started riding in December, and I love your videos. Very informative, please keep it up!
Cali has all kinds of bullshit restrictions but at least we can be proud that lane splitting is legal here.
You said that motorcycle shouldn't be allowed to lane split between two lanes going opposite directions when its not really dangerous as long as you don't go a insane speed and have common sense. I considered it just like overtaking and it didn't slow anyone else down.
That squid font tho! fire
