We’ve launched a safety awareness campaign to highlight and tackle the issue of people driving recklessly on pavements (DROPs).

Over 20 workers in the waste industry are struck by vehicles every month. 1000s of near-miss incidents are also reported every day, including motorists driving illegally and recklessly on pavements to get around waste vehicles carrying out their daily responsibilities on our roads.

All the things mentioned as part of the programme are surely already in place – most of those guys were wearing hi-vis. What this needs is for aggressive legal action to be taken against those use vehicles as weapons in an attempt to commit grievous bodily harm to public service workers.

With the existing cameras on the vans, it should be possible to have a good number of these dangerous drivers arrested and threatened with prison terms – if drivers think they can get away with it, they'll keep doing it and more people will get injured or killed.

My goodness! The trade drivers should know better!

Driving any motor vehicle on or over any pavement, footpath or bridleway is an offence under British road traffic laws, except to gain lawful access to property.
