The only other item that springs to mind when we think about motorcycle clubs is a leather jacket. The stunning motorcycles their members ride and the negative connotations associated with their gangs also come to mind. There are times when the people who devote their life to clubs are more fascinating than the clubs themselves. They have also become rather popular in recent times. Although they played a significant role in the American underworld, outlaw motorcyclists have been mythologized in popular culture. Some of their actions were explained in Hell’s Angels, a book by Hunter S. Thompson. Intriguing viewers again was the hit television drama Sons of Anarchy.

The Sons of Silence is a motorcycle club that was founded in 1966 in Niwot, Colorado. The club has a reputation for being one of the more violent and secretive motorcycle clubs in the United States, and it has a presence in a number of states across the country. The club was founded by Bruce Gale “The Dude” Richardson. Colorado Springs became the new home of the Sons of Silence’s national headquarters. Leonard Lloyd “JR” Reed, Jr. is another important person in the club’s past. Reed, who served in the navy from 1965 to 1969 like Richardson, took over as national president of the Sons of Silence in 1977 and stayed in that role for the next twenty-two years. Reed and Richard Lester, an attorney and motorcyclist, created the Colorado Confederation of Clubs in the 1990s to facilitate better communication and conflict avoidance among the state’s various motorcycle clubs.
