I have a confession to make:
I suffer from occasional anxiety.
As responsibilities pile on and the stakes rise, slowly fade away the days of reckless abandon we enjoy in our youth. To grow up is to tackle this delicate balancing act: To be a good father, husband, and employee while, ultimately, still remaining you.
This is the importance of hobbies and passion to me. At the end of a long day of fulfilling your responsibilities, to not immediately give in to the tempting call of your bed; the mindless, hollow entertainment of your living room couch; to vegetate; to go gently into that good night.
Working on cars in my free time is the answer to my equation. The “yin” to life’s many “yangs”. it balances out the disrupting forces adulthood brings and makes me feel content. It calms down my anxiety and releases endorphins. It allows me to de-stress after my daily responsibilities and brings that timeless, stupid grin I get when “nice car goes vroom”. And when it really is time to go to bed, my soul has replenished its energy to wake up the next day and do it all over again.
