I struggled with addiction for almost 10 years. I have been in and out of jail/prison for years. I now have my Bachelor’s degree in criminal program support services. 📚 I hope to use my experience in the system and my degree to help others better understand addiction and our prison system. This story is based on my own personal opinion and experiences.

How easy is therapy to access in prison? Genuine question because if prison is all about asserting control then how is anyone supposed to reform at all?!? If they can’t/aren’t working on healing themselves, and the system it seems just continuously traumatizes on purpose they are effectually perpetuating their system(I suppose that would be the point- they don’t care and truly are only in it for money)

Omg girl I absolutely agree with everything you said! Another thing that makes it hard after your released is finding a decent job with decent pay. They wonder why people go back to selling drugs but when you only make 8.25 a hour and you have children and bills and we can’t get government housing because we are felons. They should have a contract with a few good paying warehouses or something that when you get released you can start to work the very next week and with housing they should make it to where we have to take like 1 class a month for 6 months or something and let us get help with housing. If I didn’t have my fiancé me and my children would be homeless because I can’t get help with housing and no one wants to hire me because I’m a felon. Girl I can’t even get a customer service work from home job even though I’m on probation have been clean for 19 months and was clean for 6 years before my relapse what kills me is how can I hurt someone over the phone?? My probation officer says I’m doing an amazing job she has wrote me letters to give to these places where I apply. Thank god I have my fiancé that is willing to break his back to support me and the children while I go to cosmetology school and chase my dreams. Not everyone is that lucky though. I pray for everyone that is struggling with addiction, housing and job search after release, that is fighting that mental war of trying to do the right thing but in the back of their head they are like well maybe I could just do xyz a few times to get ahead for me and my family. The system is so BROKEN, hell DESTROYED
