I believe there is a reason why alot of motorcycle riders experience some type of depression. Maybe people with depression gravitate towards motorcycles? I am not sure. I started to think about why I enjoy riding and why I started…this is my take.

For 25 years I was a year-round, rain-or-shine rider. O-dark thirty, pouring rain, I loved it every day. I would not recommend that anyone take up riding, it's kind of a warrior's sport because you take your life in your hands every time you fire that thing up, if you're not okay with the prospect of death and dismemberment don't do it. But he's right, it took me out of myself and connected me with the world around me, and that world is so real and interesting that it tended to alleviate any emotional turmoil I may have been feeling. You do a great job with your channel, Dan, Thanks! Hope all is working out for you.

Wow, that struck a chord. Never considered that I was depressed, even though my doctor told me several times over the years that I was,and even prescribed me antidepressants which I refused to take. All of this occurred years after I stopped writing, but looking back I can see that I did indeed get a major psychological benefit from riding. My KZ13 definitely gave me that sense of power, and I can see now that I actually walked away from it because it was, or at least the feeling of overwhelming power it gave, was in fact addictive. Thus, when it's electrical system fried the alternator, and I had problems finding parts, I just quit looking for a way to fix it, and just stuck with my XS 650. Still had a beneficial therapeutic effect, and probably increased my life span, or at least the chance to keep my license…👀 Ride safe everyone. And thanks Dan, for all you do.

You are the man. Thank you for being open and honest about your life. I think we all have our issues and sometimes its hard to admit. I know I have mine. Im a addict in recovery with 4 years clean. Ive trying everything to just be ok with myself. I found the solution to my issue and riding is one of them but I agree that riding alone isn't enough for me. I also see a therapist and stay connected in recovery. Thanks for the refreshing video! O btw I have a little crash from a few weeks ago on my channel if you'd like to review it and give everyone some pointers. Let me know! Thanks again!

You heard it here, riding a motorcycle while on pills is amazing!

You are negating the comradery waving at biker bro’s is very inclusive and uplifting. Being alert and riding are my favourite anti depressants. I’m on nothing. Except weekly low Dose mushrooms. I can’t afford therapy.

My bike is a beautiful distraction from the darkness, no music, just me and my bike.

You teach us how to be safe, then make us want to drive into a wall. What’s going on here?

  8. Stuart Harris

I got into riding for the exact same reason. Certainly not a cure but definitely helped me. Keep up the good work.
