Was there anything Matt could have done in either of his incidents/crashes to prevent or lessen the severity or was it just unfortunate circumstances.

Glad I'm not the only one who takes the far right or left to prevent getting sandwiched in a rear-end issue. I get some odd looks, but I'd rather that than end up as a hood ornament.

Actually cars making left turns are the main reason cars get into accidents. The main reason motorcyclist get into accidents is excessive speed.

I've only had my licence for three months and I bought an awesome Cb400N used and on my first ride on the bike I got hit by an apple core because some kid threw it out the window and damn that hurt!

I had a close call last evening. A SUV came off of a interstate exit and only slowed for the stop sign. Luckily, I saw the SUV coming down the off ramp and saw it wasn't going to stop. It was the first time I had to use full on emergency braking and a swerve to avoid the SUV, just like you and many other bloggers preach practicing.

All of these are good points and you gotta still vigilant at all times. That being said, sporting a beard while riding will automatically give you +10 to your protection stat.
