My dad lost the movement in his arm from the pull from the helmet away from the shoulder. Tore all of the nerves. So he has no movement in his left arm now. But he is still here.
Hey! I was just on that course the beginning of the month for my class. New to riding and watching all the videos I can; thanks for making these (from Sierra Vista)!
I'm here just to read the comments "Hey big baby, i been riding fro 5000 years without helmets or any gear, ride like a man or don't!!" "You been riding only for 6 years next to me, you are nothing!!!"
I'll throw out a controversial one: 'high visibility gear makes you highly visible'. There are some good reasons to think that's a myth.
One you touched on Dan: inattentional blindness and LBFTS incidents. People will sometimes even fail to see emergency vehicles with the flashing lights on so a white helmet and fluorescent yellow jacket isn't going to make much difference. Likewise reflective strips and patches: if someone hasn't seen a bright headlight or tail-light, they're not going to see a little reflector (especially as they have to be at just the right angle for it to be effective anyway).
Second, visual conspicuity is not a simple matter of colour, it's also a matter of contrast – perhaps even more than colour. A white helmet blends into the white van behind you (white vans are extremely common in the UK), the white or light grey of the buildings, the overcast sky etc. A black helmet doesn't – although it will blend in to the darkness of a night sky, shadows down alleyways, etc. A bright orange helmet will be great… camouflage with a red London bus behind you, or a sunset, or a construction site using lots of orange markers. Fluorescent yellow / green (a) only fluoresces under UV light, so is not highly visible at night or on heavily clouded days, and (b) blends in surprisingly well with some natural yellows and greens. Bottom line: unless you have some kind of chameleon-like adaptive non-camouflage technology, whatever colour your kit is, it will be highly visible in some situations and nearly invisible in others.
Third (but related to second) varied colour schemes are a bad idea. For example, a red 'bike, black trousers, yellow jacket and white helmet might seem like you're covering a lot of bases. Whatever is behind you, something will contrast, right? Well, yes – but now you've broken up your outline, which is an excellent way to camouflage yourself (there's a reason the military use disruptive pattern material and paint schemes).
The 'Sam Brown belt' (I don't know what you call them in the USA), supposedly a safety item, falls down on all three of these!
My advice would be to not worry about kit 'visibility', just protectiveness, and ride with the mindset that it all makes you invisible. (But not to cops or speed cameras! π )
People care more about the second amendment in your country than people
The speed of sound is 767mph. How do we outdrive the sound we make? I know you're right bc I've experienced it but how does it work?
Much respect to you DDFM!
I disagree with your take regarding loud pipes. What you're saying is not absolute. Not every one drives while listening to loud music or in late model vehicles with a sound proof interiors. If I have to choose, I will always choose to have loud pipes.
I'm in Tucson. I would love to take your rider course, but almost $400 is way way too steep for me.
It's not even about Me, Don't hurt my Bike, lol!!! πππππππ
