The question “can riding a motorcycle really help your mental health?” gets asked often, and the response from riders is always a very positive, yes. But is there any actual science behind it? As riders, we can attest to how riding helps you spend time in your own mind whilst concentrating on the task at hand. So for this video, I decided to dig into it a little deeper, talk about some of my experiences and also introduce a very worthwhile campaign.

Brilliant video Tony. So very open and brave for you to talk like that. You have my total respect. 100% agree with everything you said! Well done sir.
I'm only learning, but I feel great during and after a lesson. Can't wait to do it regularly.
Great vid and good on you for being so honest, as I have suffered with depression for years and it wasn’t easy to to admit that I it and to talk about it, so great to have so many people trying to get us all talking👍
Whenever I feel Depressed, I go for ride & whenever I feel Happy I always go for ride.
Because I believe, 4 wheels moves Body & 2 wheels moves "Soul"
Riding a motorcycle has saved my life, no doubt about that. I have been working as a police officer in the Netherlands for 23 years and the last 5 years were totally destructive. In 2008 I started riding motorcycle again and it was the only time I felt no pain. I left the policeforce in 2009 in hope to find a job were I could recover but that didn't work out. I lost that job in 2012. In 2014 medical examinations proved that I was suffering from PTSD. In that period I rode my motorcycle quit often and it helped me to stay alive. I didn't need alcohol, drugs, medicine or whatever, just needed my daily ride. In 2014 I was treated with EMDR therapy and this was a lifesaver. Since then I have been riding motorcycle and travelling through Europe and North-Africa on a regular base. That made me stronger and more positive every day. In between I have been working several jobs and every time I was improving. Riding motorcycle clears your mind, you can't think of anything else while riding, otherwise you will get killed in a traffic accident. Riding motorcycle will improve your confidence and you will become more active. Riding motorcycle will reduce tensions and anxieties. Riding motorcycle improves bodystrength and reflexes. The fact that I am still alive is the best proof! If you know someboyd who has PTSD, please take him/her for a ride.
Pretty sure that i have had PTSD since i was a kid growing up in the East End of London with a violent alcoholic dad who thought it was fun to shoot a twelve bore shotgun from the balcony of the flat in Bethnal Green we lived in. I too have a wonderful wife (i don't deserve her) and two excellent kids.
Unfortunately mental health issues have discouraged me riding. My nerves and anxiety over the last 18 months or so have been unpleasant. Just watching this video has set my guts churning. Only yesterday I rode my bike (not by choice) to the docs to get help with mental health advice, so that statement is not always true. 😏
It really is a gift that we have as motorcyclists and we should not take it for granted and use it when ever we can.
My situation is an extremely rare scenario to be in where the most dominant aspect of my life has been taken away from me. Things are improving but I have long struggle ahead to get back to where I was.
When you are struggling with mental health issues it is the hardest thing anyone can have put on them and those involved need all the help they can get.
I have suffered depression and anxiety for more years than I know. I turned 50 in April and it was only yesterday I asked for help. My job is a night time truck driver and in November 2019 experienced the first of two suicides. Yes, it’s difficult to believe but it really is true. So I can confirm this stuff really does go on and it took for those two events for me to admit I had issues and go and get help. So I would urge anyone ‘JUST ASK’.
Thank you for putting out this video. I know how hard that must of been. I never been able to talk to a camera or I would have put my own video message out there by now. 👍
Doesn’t matter when or where, “a Sunday drive” in any vehicle ,if it’s in your DNA and you enjoy it ,is a great therapy.
