Reciprocity, good term! As members of the animal kingdom group known as mammals, human beings have very specific brain cells known as mirror neurons. These are brain cells that are active both while observing a thing and while experiencing that same thing. Most of our brain cells don't function in this manner. It's an either or type of operation. One of the primary areas that do include mirror neurons are our emotions. This means that when we observe another person or animal that is displaying any given emotional state, that unless we actively choose to disregard it (or have certain other mechanisms that block this action) we then mirror, or manifest that same emotion within ourselves. This is the most basic function of emotional empathy.
So what does that mean? In the most basic terms it's an example of monkey see, monkey do. Or on an emotional level we tend to feel the same emotions that are displayed to us by others. And most people are content to allow others to dictate the emotional tone of any given interaction. Wait, what? Really?… Yes really. Unless we actively choose to maintain a certain emotional tone, we are, all of us, subject to being controlled by others insofar as how we feel is concerned. It is a basic social adaptation that drives us to be social animals. Whenever we match the emotional state of someone we are interacting with, our brains are structured to release reward hormones such as dopamine and acetylcholine. This is what drives us to want to fit in with the group and to feel like everyone else.
On the road however, our interactions tend to be too brief for this process to fully manifest itself. We tend to only get the initial stage of recognizing that another driver or rider is either being chill, or expressing anger and aggression. And since we tend to move on to other interactions so quickly while in traffic, it's an natural tendency that we carry previous encounters into our current situation. So it ends up looking something like this. One person acts in a way that we view as showing anger toward us. We then carry that emotional state forward with us, and express that emotion in the way that we operate our ride. Others on the road pick up on this and mirror it back towards us. This can have a snowball effect commonly referred to as road rage.
How well we personally, emotionally self regulate, will determine how well we remain that chill rider out to have a good time on our bikes, as opposed to being that person who feels like everyone is out to get them. Flipping everyone the bird, yelling obscenities, rev bombing, and making the ride into a competition of one upmanship. And that is a place, where none of us want to end up, because it's exactly then that we make the worst decisions and get ourselves and possibly others hurt or killed.
Anyways, DDFM, always glad to see your videos come out. Keep up the good work. Oh, and by the way Kevin over at MC Rider gave you a shout out on one of his recent videos covering the different channels that he frequently watches. Ciao for now. And I hope you day treats you well.
Thats not who I am – if you react that way before you consider the situation.. that is exactly who you are. It's you unfiltered…
When I think of "throttle therapy", I think more like "I'm going to stop thinking about my problems and only focus on the road".
Riding works for me because it takes all my worries away, and I only worry about the road. IMO, throttle therapy isn't about going on the road angry, or at least it shouldn't be.
Powerful message, but unfortunately, it probably fell on deaf ears.
"that's not who I am, I don't shoot people because they cut me off"… poor man-slaughterer; nope sorry no sympathy here. Can not empathize, I'm also not part of that 50% that responds. Seriously in a world where the government(s) take 30% of your hard work and waste 95% of it, being 2-3 seconds later than I would be otherwise is not rage inducing.
You're exposed in a car(pu and suv included). even pistol bullets will completely penetrate an auto. Even the engine block is no guarantee ( unless you're in a Hollywood production).
why not wear a bulletproof vest under your jacket?
Running from trouble when they at fault is very hard to do. I think we should be able to protect ourselves. Either way great channel. New sub.
Dan, you should watch some of the other motorbike YouTube channels, I think from the way other countries ride, they watch them and then learn rev bomb, hitting mirrors etc, as one channel I watched they did exactly that and the minute a car bus didn't see them and they had to brake they cursed the driver and beeped and told them off. Asian countries maybe beep, rev bomb the most, as bikers get stuck behind cars. With the bus the channel I saw cars let the bus rejoin traffic, the biker behind and then he decide ride past cars and beep bus because he had to stop behind cars and let bus go.
