Chinese road authorities are using a unique method of keeping drivers awake during night time travel, but not everyone agrees.

Videos of a laser display across a Chinese highway have gone viral across various social media platforms – with overseas reports claiming it is a method tested by Chinese authorities to combat driver fatigue at night.

The lasers in the video are mounted on freeway signs along the 1600km Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressway and can be seen alternating between red, purple, blue and green light beams projected across the sky.

According to one user on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), “This road is mainly used by heavy trucks from the capital city of Ningxia where [it is] located in Northwest China to the port city of Qingdao,” they said.

“These truck drivers never rest because the cost of highway’s toll is really expensive.”

Mr Li, the motorist who recorded the footage claimed the laser display “revitalized him and reduced his exhaustion,” however not everyone agrees.

Some users on social media platforms have labelled the lasers a “distraction” with others highlighting the lighting display as a potential health concern.

“Erm what about people with epilepsy,” a TikTok user said, and another claimed the lasers were “more [of a] reason to never drive at night with my astigmatism.”

Various other online users found the unique anti-sleep method entertaining with some even likening the laser display to a popular video game track, Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road.
