“I went to a garden party

To reminisce with my old friends

A chance to share old memories

And play our songs again

When I got to the garden party

They all knew my name”

Those words are the opening lyrics to Ricky Nelson’s 1972 hit record, Garden Party. But they apply quite well to the scene Friday at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, an event hosted for the 18th time by Gordon McCall and Peninsula Signature Events at The Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.

Yes, the event is another of the car shows held during Monterey Car Week. But it also is a garden party for those interested in cars. People dress up for the event and in addition to seeing the amazing array of automobiles, they enjoy an array of fine food and wine.

Perhaps more so than any other event during Monterey Car Week, The Quail is where people gather to reminisce with old friends and to share old memories. And especially so this year, since The Quail, like the rest of Monterey Car Week 2020, was canceled by the pandemic.

Yes, you can meet old friends at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, but by the end of the day, a lot of new people likely will know your name as well — and will look forward to greeting you again the following year.

To quote Ricky Nelson one more time:

“People came from miles around, everyone was there.”
