Where there’s smoke there may not be fire, new figures show.
Tesla electric vehicles are 11 times less likely to catch fire than petrol and diesel-powered alternatives, according to a study released overnight by the California-based manufacturer.
“From 2012 to 2020, there has been approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 205 million miles travelled. By comparison, data show that in the US there is one ICE [internal combustion engine] vehicle fire for every 19 million miles travelled,” the company’s 2020 Impact Report found.
The article cites data “gathered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation” however relevant figures are not directly linked.
Further, a report last year found electric vehicle battery blazes could require “up to” 150,000 litres of water to extinguish – for reference, a ‘normal’ car fire can generally be put out with between 500 and 1000 litres of water.
A statement from Tesla said: “In the rare instances where Tesla vehicles are involved in a fire, we provide detailed information to first responders so they can safely handle those emergency situations … We continue to improve our battery chemistry, cell structure, battery pack structure and vehicle passive safety in order to decrease fire risk to as close to zero as possible.”
