Robert Downey Jr. Wants to Give You His Car

Chances are you know who Robert Downey Jr. is. Did you know he has a car collection? And, thanks to the RDJ Dream Cars Sweepstakes, you can be one of six winners who will receive a classic car.

And what are these classics?  Pull up a chair and let’s examine:

Since these six cars are being given away by a Hollywood celebrity, there’s gotta be a catch — and you would not be wrong. In this case, “each … of these beauties [were] converted to drive to a pollution-free future.” Sound scary? Bless your collective hearts, my friends, but there’s nothing to fear here: all but the Chevy K10 and VW Bus have been converted to EV power, so the “cool cars” are still powered by internal combustion.

Nonetheless, how else have the cars been modified to be more Earth-friendly?

• The Corvette features a mushroom-based leather alternative from Ecovative. Only mushrooms have been harmed in the process.
• The Riv features a prototype water cooler system that uses a new air quality sensor that allows the driver to gather real-time air quality data anywhere (s)he drives.
• The Mercedes features a modern diesel engine that was converted to run on biodiesel, plus it features a synthetic suede-like interior that comes from recycled bottles.
• The Chevrolet K10 uses a converted Tesla drivetrain.
• The VW Bus uses a custom-built BBQ that’s recharged via solar panels, and the set of surfboards were made from recycled Firewire material.
•  The El Camino features two miniature solar panels that charges a pair of Rad Runner electrobikes.

The sweepstakes is being spearheaded by the FootPrint Coalition, a coalition of investors, donors, and more. Founded by Robert Downey Jr., the coalition promotes sustainability via investing in high-growth, sustainability-focused companies, making charitable grants to non-profits that advance the adoption of environmental technology, and creating content to inform and mobilize the public.
