The names Jim and Mike Ring might not ring a bell in your mind, but mention of their better-known moniker as the Ringbrothers likely does. Based in the tiny town of Spring Green, Wisconsin, the brothers are among the country’s top custom car builders.
Their latest work is a resto-mod 1968 Mercury Cougar.
“We had never done a Cougar before, so this was a fun build,” said Mike Ring, who added, “I love working with new shapes and coming up with new ideas.
“I imagine this is what Mercury designers would have come up with if they were building the Cougar today,” Jim Ring suggested.
Like the original back in the 1960s, a new Cougar likely would be based on the Ford Mustang.
Beneath the hood of the Ringbrothers’ Cougar is a 460 horsepower Coyote 5.0-liter V8 linked to a 10-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission, which is usually used in the Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck. The powertrain exhales through a customer Flowmaster exhaust.
The car also has new floor pans, transmission tunnel, DSE suspension, new brakes and HRE Series C1 C103 forged 3-piece wheels with Michelin tires.
The car has several billet aluminum parts custom-produced for the project by the Ringbrothers’ shop. It also has a new bumper, grille, badging and BASF paint.
