The world’s first significant fleet of electric police cars is due hit to the streets of New York city this year.
New York City has ordered 184 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric police cars, set to hit the streets by June this year.
The fleet – which was priced at $US11.5 million ($AU16 million), or $US60,000 ($AU80,000) per vehicle – is believed to be the world’s first significant batch of zero-emission law enforcement cars.
Ford pulled the covers off a bespoke police variant of its Mustang Mach-E (shown below) in September last year, and at the time the model was trialled by Michigan authorities to a lukewarm reception.
The specialised SUV – which is roughly equivalent to the road-going ‘GT’ specification – is powered by dual motors, sending 357kW/813Nm to all four wheels.
A 75.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack permits a range of 434km on the EPA testing cycle, and integrated sirens, radios, and additional LED lights are fitted as standard.
The NYPD currently has just over 6000 vehicles, and, with the addition of the newest batch, approximately 3.0 per cent will be powered entirely by electricity.
The city is reportedly also considering a contract for 250 Tesla Model 3 sedans. However, this is yet to be finalised.
While not yet widespread, small batches of electric police cars are already used by some police departments across the globe.
