A new-generation version of the Ford Mustang GT ‘California’ special is expected to be revealed in the US this weekend.

The global boss of Ford has teased a new generation of the Mustang GT California Special edition online, with the limited-run muscle car due to be unveiled later this week.

In a post on social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – Ford CEO Jim Farley uploaded a dimly-lit image of a Mustang’s front grille, complete with a GT/CS (for GT California Special) badge in its corner.

Users of X proceeded to increase the brightness and contrast of the image, revealing a date – 11/11/23 – and coordinates which locate the car park of a shopping centre in San Clemente, approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego.

The date and location are shared with a ‘Cars and Coffee’ meeting event which takes place at the shopping centre every Saturday morning, suggesting the latest Ford Mustang GT California Special will be revealed in the public eye.

The previous ‘S550’-generation Ford Mustang GT California Special

The California Special name dates back to 1968 and the first-generation Ford Mustang. Revivals of the nameplate have occurred in the 1980s, late 2000s and throughout the 2010s.

Previous versions of the Ford Mustang GT California Special – such as the last-generation model, sold in Australia in 2022 – were based on the standard GT but introduced unique additional exterior and interior cosmetic features.

It is not yet known whether the new Mustang GT California Special will be sold in Australia, though more information is expected to become available when Ford reveals the model this week.
