The on-again-off-again electric ute appears to be on-again … or is this a publicity stunt?

What appears to be a near-production-ready example of the Tesla Cybertruck has been spied testing in the US, as mystery surrounds the electric pick-up’s future.

Unlike the original 2019 concept version of the Tesla Cybertruck, this pick-up – caught on camera by Drive Tesla at Castle Airport in California – is fitted with side mirrors, in accordance with road regulations.

On Twitter today Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, said: “They’re [the mirrors] required by law, but designed to be easy to remove by owners.”

The nose appears to have been shortened, and equipped with extra lights. The wheel and tyre package appears to be smaller than what was fitted to the concept vehicle.

A short video suggests the vehicle may be fitted with rear-wheel steering (although a tri-motor layout could replicate the manoeuvre with torque vectoring).

The low-resolution images – which Drive estimates were taken from more than 1km away – don’t reveal much else, however they give the best indication yet the model could still be destined for production.

It was speculated at the time the model could be undergoing a heavily redesign before launch, because its sharp front facia and aluminium exoskeleton are incompatible with existing safety regulations. However, others suggest the move could have simply been a publicly stunt to attract media attention. .
