Has Mitsubishi discovered a real version of the Wayback Machine used by Mr. Peabody and Sherman to explore history on a regular segment of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show that aired from the late 1950s to the mid-’60s?
We ask because Mitsubishi Motors North America not only has unveiled its 2021 Mirage 5-door hatchback, but says the base price will be only $14,295 — for a brand-new vehicle that Mitsubishi says is the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered non-hybrid available. It also comes with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a 5-speed manual transmission.
Or, for $15,295, there’s the 2021 Mirage G4 sedan, also equipped with what Mitsubishi calls “critical active safety and driver assistance features.”
The automaker adds that the styling of both models has been updated outside and in the passenger compartment.
The vehicles are available in two new colors for 2021 — White Diamond and Sand Yellow, though the yellow hue is available only on the hatchback version.
Standard equipment includes forward collision-mitigation technology with pedestrian detection and a 7-inch smartphone link display audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto3 compatibility.
A new Carbonite Edition is available as well with an aero-style body kit.
The cars are propelled by 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engines rated at 78 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque, and with either a 5-speed manual or CVT transmission. The CVT is rated at 36 mpg city and 43 highway, Mitsubishi adds.
