BMW’s small-car subsidiary has slashed the price of its only electric car to clear stock – now cheaper than its petrol-powered equivalent – ahead of a new model due next year.

Until the end of this year – or while stocks last – both variants of the Mini Electric (or Cooper SE) are being offered for $49,990 drive-away nationwide, excluding optional extras.

It represents a saving of about $20,000 compared to the list prices of $64,975 plus on-road costs for the Cooper SE Mini Yours, or $65,325 plus on-road costs for the Cooper SE Resolute special edition – which typically equate to about $71,000 drive-away for both vehicles.

Prior to this month the Mini Cooper SE Resolute was offered with a $59,990 drive-away special offer.

The electric version is now cheaper than an equivalently-specified petrol Mini Cooper three-door hatch, which costs $48,050 plus on-road costs, or an estimated $53,000 drive-away.

The offer appears intended to clear stock of the outgoing Mini Electric (Cooper SE) – which is based on a car introduced a decade ago – ahead of the new model due in the third quarter of 2024 (July to September).

Drive has contacted Mini Australia to confirm if buyers can still place a factory order, or if production has ceased.

It is the lowest price the Mini Electric has been since the current model arrived in showrooms in 2020. Two years ago the base-model Classic – which has now been axed – was priced from $55,650 plus on-road costs, or about $61,000 drive-away.

It is also now in the same price range as ‘budget-priced’ electric hatchbacks from China – albeit with five doors and longer driving ranges – including the MG 4 Essence 64 ($49,287 to $52,701 drive-away), BYD Dolphin Premium ($45,536 to $48,529 drive-away) and GWM Ora Ultra ($49,606 to $53,039 drive-away).

The latest drive-away offer applies to “new and demonstrator” vehicles “purchased and delivered” before the end of December 2023 – or while stocks last. Any optional extras fitted to the vehicle will command an extra cost.

Included in the price is a five-year subscription to Chargefox public charging stations.
