In its almost 100-year history, there has never been an MG capable of accelerating faster than figures claimed for the upcoming Cyberster electric roadster.

The MG Cyberster – an upcoming electric car from China with a 1960s roadster-inspired design – will be the fastest vehicle ever made by the brand, according to published claims.

Last week, automotive publication Motor1 discovered MG had uploaded certain specifications for the Cyberster’s flagship, all-wheel-drive variant to its Chinese website.

While previous information has shown the top-of-the-range MG Cyberster will produce up to 400kW, the car-maker’s website now shows a claimed peak torque figure of 725Nm.

The claimed acceleration figure beats the electric MG4 XPower by 0.6 seconds, and the V8-powered MG X Power SV-R from the mid-2000s by almost two seconds.

It is also quicker than the famed MG Metro 6R4 rally car, which was built during the fearsome era of ‘Group B’ regulations – but could manage a 0-100km/h time of only 3.5 seconds.

The MG Cyberster’s top speed is reportedly capped at 200km/h for dual-motor variants, and 193km/h for the single-motor grades.

The design of the MG Cyberster is based on the classic MGB roadster, though the modern electric car represents a significant growth compared to its long-gone predecessor – measuring 4535mm in length, 1913mm wide, 1329mm tall and riding on a 2690mm wheelbase.

As previously reported, leaked pricing from China has suggested a starting price in Australia closer to $70,000 or $80,000 plus on-road costs – while the flagship dual-motor grade could go on sale from $90,000 to $95,000 locally.

The MG Cyberster has been confirmed for the Australian market, and is expected in local showrooms next year or in 2025.
