The flagship version of Affalterbach’s new GT sports coupe is claimd to combine the GT63 S four-door’s V8 engine and an electric motor for a combined power output of more than 600kW.

Mercedes-AMG has previewed a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its second-generation GT with the unveiling of a lightly veiled prototype of the new electrified coupe at the 2023 Munich motor show in Germany.

Displayed as part of a presentation of new and upcoming Mercedes-Benz models open to the public, the new GT variant is the more sporting two-door alternative to the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe sedan – with which it is planned to share its mechanicals – according to AMG officials.

Underneath its vibrant black and red body wrap, the unidentified GT prototype appears identical to the GT63 4Matic+ petrol V8 coupe revealed in California last month, except for one tell-tale detail: a charging port flap housed within the right-hand side of the rear bumper.

Nothing is official just yet, though the hybrid GT is claimed to receive a new petrol-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain that mates the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine from the new GT63 4Matic+ with a rear axle-mounted electric motor and lithium-ion battery.

This is 190kW and 500Nm more than that developed by the GT63 4Matic+, indicating that the upcoming plug-in hybrid is set to become AMG’s most powerful GT model yet.

Up until now, that distinction has been held by the GT Black Series, which offers 537kW and 800Nm from a non-electrified version of AMG’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine.
