The iconic eight-time World Rally Championship winner is set to return with electric-only power.
Instead of creating a car from scratch, French racing team Green Corp Konnection Motorsport (GCK) have decided to retrofit a 1989 Lancia Delta Integrale with electric running gear instead.
Powering the ‘Lancia Delta Evo-E’ is a competition-grade electric driveline provided by Austrian firm Kreisel.
According to its website, Kreisel has successfully converted over 150 petrol or diesel vehicles to electric, and is directly involved in the hybridisation tech expected to be used by competitors in the 2022 World Rally Championship (WRC) season.
GCK Motorsport claim the Kreisel electric running gear – common across the 14-car grid – produces 500kW/880Nm and enables “acceleration faster than that of a Formula 1 car”.
Looking at the promotional video shared below, GCK Motorsport have enlisted ex-Lancia works driver Didier Auriol for a shakedown. In the video, he’s seen shifting what looks like a H-pattern gearbox.
The 2022 World Rallycross Championship is expected to start early in 2022. For the first-time ever, all vehicles on the grid will be electric.
