The Italian supercar maker built its legacy on high-powered V12 petrol engines. Now it seems poised to join the modern electric-car era.
Lamborghini is reportedly preparing to launch an all-electric four-seat crossover SUV in 2028, according to Autocar UK.
The all-new model is set to be followed by the second generation of the larger Urus SUV (shown below), which will swap its twin turbo V8 for electric power, according to the report.
“Yes, electrification is part of our future … It’s a completely new car: the fourth model. It’s a segment we haven’t been in for decades, if we speak about a 2+2 or four-seater, maybe also high from the ground, with more ground clearance,” CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar.
“There will be more ground clearance than a normal car, that’s the idea, but there isn’t a clear decision taken so far, and therefore it’s a bit early to discuss this in depth.”
According to the CEO, technical development on the yet-to-be named model will begin later this year.
Performance and specification details are yet to be disclosed, however Mr Winkelmann added: “It’s clear the car has to be a real Lamborghini, but, on the other hand, there’s no manufacturer who does everything in-house, so we have the chance to buy inside the group or outside the group. This is a big advantage we have.”
Lamborghini has confirmed plans to switch its entire line-up to plug-in hybrid power by the end of 2024, commencing with replacements for the Aventador and Huracan supercars in 2023 and 2024 respectively – and a Urus SUV hybrid before the aforementioned deadline.
