Lamborghini spent 25,000 hours reconstructing a Countach LP 500 prototype

Lamborghini ‘s restoration team, Polo Storico, has manufactured an exact replica of the iconic Countach LP 500 – 50 years after it made its first appearance at the Geneva Motor Show.

In collaboration with Lamborghini Centro Stile (Lamborghini’s internal design department), the team spent 25,000 hours recreating the vehicle for an anonymous collector. The car is due to be on display in Italy this weekend, at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The original show car was destroyed during crash testing.

The creators employed computer scanning technology, analysed original build documents and delved through photos to ensure that every detail was emulated perfectly. While the build was conducted completely from scratch, the team incorporated original parts where possible.

The replica’s body has been finished in the traditional Giallo Fly Speciale, with the chassis, drivetrain and Pirelli Cinturato CN12 tyres all handed down from the original LP 500 prototype.

“Bringing the reconstruction of the first Countach to the concept class of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, in the year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this model, is something extraordinary because it allows us to admire the legendary 1971 LP 500 in person for the first time in so many years.” said Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobil Lamborghini.

The brand also paid homage to the iconic supercar back in August, unveiling the Countach LPI 800-4. Only 112 examples will be built with deliveries expected to commence at the beginning of 2022.
