The fault could cause an airbag failure during a crash, according to the recall notice.
Kia Australia has recalled 40,817 examples of its Carnival people mover, Cerato small car, and Soul small hatch-turned-SUV, citing an airbag fault.
The affected vehicles are stamped Model Years 2016 to 2018.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing issue, the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) cover and the Electronically Erasable Programming Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) chip may have been produced with insufficient clearance.
“This could cause the airbag warning lights to illuminate and the airbags may not deploy … In the event of an accident an airbag not deploying as intended could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”
