Dale Earnhardt Sr. was known as “The Intimidator” and he lived up to that nickname, especially at the race track.
One time at Michigan International Speedway, he was doing pace car rides and I suddenly heard, “Edsall! Get your butt into this car!” And I did, without hesitation.
Another NASCAR weekend at the track, I had a JDM-spec Nissan Figaro as my test car, and perhaps the only things it had in common with a Winston Cup car was 4 wheels and tires (even its steering wheel was on the other side of the passenger compartment).
But Earnhardt took an interest in the car, climbed in behind the wheel and drove it past all the guards and into the garage area so he could show it off to the other racers and his crew.
Which brings us to the Pick of the Day, a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Intimidator / Dale Earnhardt Signature Series being offered for sale on ClassicCars.com by its private owner — since new!
The seller was an employee of a Chevrolet dealership when the car was introduced and reports having “all kinds of documentation that usually is never available to the public.”
“I am the original owner, offering the highest, fully documented 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo ‘Dale Earnhardt Signature Series’ car known to exist,” the seller reports.
“Excellent condition inside & out. Car is 100% all original, except for the battery! It has only 29K original miles. This car runs & drives perfect. The original, never used, ‘#3 Intimidator’ floor mats still in trunk! Highly maintained & garage kept. This is a limited production, collector car #1935 of only 3,333 ever produced! (see certificate of authenticity).”
The seller adds that the car was produced by Earnhardt and NASCAR team owner Richard Childress and was “made available directly from Chevrolet. All other similar vehicles, were never officially sanctioned by Richard Childress Racing, and don’t have any #3’s or RCR logo’s anywhere on them. This includes all other Chevrolet ‘Intimidator’ models. This is a very desirable car for any Earnhardt/NASCAR fan!”
The seller also notes that the car has been autographed — and includes in the advertisements photographs of those autographs being written in the car — by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Childress, crew chiefs Kirk Shelmerdine and Andy Petree, team gas man Chocolate Myers, and by Danny Lawrence, Earnhardt’s engine tuner and pit crew member.
Unlike the cars Earnhardt raced on the track, Monte Carlos were powered by Chevrolet’s 3.8-liter V6 engines which were rated at 200 horsepower, including Intimidator models.
The Pick of the Day is located in Apex, North Carolina, and is being offered for $21,833.
