The upcoming electric sedan is “on track” to arrive in local showrooms before the end of 2022, and will join Hyundai’s electric-car range alongside the Ioniq 5, Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan is “on track” to launch in Australia this year, a local spokesperson for the Korean manufacturer has confirmed to Drive.
While yet to break cover in production guise, a concept version of the Ioniq 6 four-door was revealed at the digital replacement for the 2020 Geneva motor show as the Prophecy (above).
It will join the the already-available Ioniq 5 SUV under the marque’s ‘Ioniq’ electric vehicle sub-brand range – unrelated to the Ioniq hatchback – and the larger, yet-to-debut Ioniq 7 seven-seater in 2024.
A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia told Drive: “We’re excited to confirm the Ioniq 6 is on track to launch in Australia this year.”
While a date is yet to be locked in, it’s highly likely the car will not arrive in local showrooms until very late in 2022. For reference, the Ioniq 5 was revealed in February 2021, but didn’t reach Australian shores until September or October.
In January a camouflaged example of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 was spied in transit, revealing the production car will – like the Ioniq 5 SUV before it – stay largely faithful to the concept on which it is based.
A report from the Korean Car Blog earlier this year suggested an output of 230kW is likely in the range-topping all-wheel drive variant – similar to the Kia EV6, which offers 239kW in all-wheel-drive GT-Line guise.
The same source claims a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack will be fitted as standard across the line-up, permitting a range in excess of 500km.
