The electric Honda SUV E:prototype was unveiled overnight at the 2021 Shanghai motor show, as the likely successor to the existing HR-V petrol-powered family car.

The new model is an evolution of the Honda SUV E:concept, revealed during the 2020 Beijing motor show. Design cues are clearly drawn from the new-generation HR-V, however it’s unclear if underpinnings are shared or, instead, if this is a ground-up new car).

Honda has confirmed a production variant of the zero-emission SUV will come onto the market in China by mid-2022, before rolling out globally against a yet-to-be-finalised timeline. At least aesthetically, it is unlikely the final product will deviate significantly from the newly-revealed prototype, as per past Honda prototype models that have made it to production (such as the Civic and Honda E).
