Ford will soon be using lithium sourced from Australian soil in its electric vehicle batteries.
Australian mining company Liontown Resources has signed an agreement with Ford to supply the US car giant with lithium, following similar deals with Tesla and LG Energy, Reuters reports.
The company says it will supply Ford with 150,000 tonnes of lithium annually for five years.
The material, sourced from Liontown’s Kathleen Valley mine in Western Australia, is an essential component in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles.
Australia’s stable government and high levels of industrial safety make the country an attractive proposition over other resource-rich countries.
