Nissan’s final R35-generation GT-R has reached Australia – marking the last Nissan fitted with a physical Australian Design Rules compliance plate.
The R35-generation 2022 Nissan GT-R has reached the end of the road in Australia, with the final example arriving in Australia and receiving its compliance label – the last physical compliance plate to grace a Nissan vehicle locally.
As reported first by Drive, the R35 GT-R has fallen foul of new Australian Design Rules (ADRs) for side-impact crashes, which came into effect on 1 November 2021 for existing vehicles introduced prior to November 2017 – regulations Nissan opted not to upgrade the iconic supercar to meet.
A final batch of approximately 50 cars – including two special editions, T-Spec and Nismo SV – will mark the R35’s discontinuation in Australia – the last example of which has now received its compliance plate in Victoria on October 29, before being delivered to its new owner.
Compliance plates (or labels) certify that the vehicle to which they are affixed meets all Australian Design Rules, and is legal to register for road use locally.
While ADR compliance has been recognised with a physical sticker or metal plate since 1989, the recent introduction of new motor vehicle standards will soon see this process move exclusively online – making this GT-R T-Spec the final Nissan vehicle to be fitted with a compliance plate in Australia.
It’s worth noting the date on the compliance plate – set after the vehicle arrives in Australia, and passes through a certification process – differs from the build date, which signifies when the vehicle rolled off the assembly line. It’s the latter, not the former, that is used to determine a car’s age at the time of sale.
“The GT-R is Nissan’s most celebrated vehicle, and while this isn’t goodbye forever, the T-Spec and NISMO SV models do act as the closing of this chapter of the GT-R story in Australia,” said Nissan Australia managing director Adam Paterson.
“The fact that the last version of this generation of Nissan’s performance icon will also be the last to wear a label that’s been part of the fabric of Australian automotive history for more than 30 years is entirely fitting.”
