On first glance this Ferrari 812 Competizione looks like it has been drawn on with a Sharpie – but the one-off supercar was commissioned to be sold at auction, raising millions of dollars for charity in the process.

As reported by CarBuzz, the one-off Ferrari 812 Competizione – a hardcore race-track-focused coupe which is limited to 999 examples – was unveiled in August this year after being commissioned by Ferrari’s North American division for its annual ‘Gala’ auction.

According to the publication, the bespoke model sold for a hammer price of $US5.1 million ($AU8.1 million) – more than eight times its circa-$US600,000 ($AU950,000) list price in the US – with all proceeds going to charity.

While at first glance it may look like a ‘regular’ 812 Competizione vandalised with a Sharpie pen, there’s more to this interesting livery than meets the eye.

Its unique livery was designed by Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer, Flavio Manzoni, who designed the sketches based on how the car-maker’s new models are first drawn on a piece of yellow paper.

A common theme throughout the livery is how the 812 Competizione’s bodywork is shaped to maximise its aerodynamic efficiency, allowing it to cut through the air while still allowing its front splitter and rear spoiler/splitter to generate downforce.

A similar approach was adopted in the coupe’s interior, as its bright yellow seats and lower dashboard were treated to the sketch design, along with what Ferrari claims is ‘new-generation Alcantara’.

No changes were made to the 812 Competizione’s 6.5-litre V12 engine, which produces 610kW and 692Nm, delivered to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Ferrari Gala was also attended by the car-maker’s CEO, John Elkann, as well as its two Formula One drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr.
