Plug-in. Charge. Escape! This quick-release charging accessory for Teslas is the one gadget you hope to never use.
We’ve visited our fair share of electric vehicle charging stations that are located in some less-than-glamourous locations, but none have yet made us want one of these.
The EVject is a breakaway adaptor that fits between an electric vehicle charging station cable and a Tesla. It is designed to allow the car to charge normally but then unlock and release if the car is driven away while the charger is active.
Standard charging connections will not allow the car to be driven while it is connected to a charger, but the developer of the EVject has noted that this makes charging in some locations risky for drivers. If there is a threat outside your car and you want to leave, you have to exit your vehicle and disconnect the cable before driving away.
The connection is designed to allow you to stop the charging session from within the car, select drive (or reverse) and leave the charging station without leaving your car.
The US$199 device (A$305) is available for Tesla NACS and CCS2 charging stations and plugs between the car and charging cable. In the event of an emergency exit from your charger, the EVject breaks in half to safely sever the charging connection and allow you to escape.
While this may seem expensive for what is essentially a single-use item (if you have to drive away), if you share your Tesla’s video camera footage of the charging adaptor breaking away they will send you a replacement unit free of charge.
The unit is currently only compatible with Tesla vehicles but development to support other electric cars is underway.
Is this something you would keep in the glovebox for those extra dodgy charging stations? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
