Plug-in hybrids might not be as popular as hybrid and fully-electric cars, but there’s still a wide array of options available across most car and SUV segments.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are often overlooked in Australia compared to hybrid (HEV) and fully-electric (BEV) vehicles – but their blend of the best of hybrid and electric cars is well suited to many buyers.
Sales of plug-in hybrids in Australia are up 104 per cent in the first half of 2022, over the same period last year – compared to 127 per cent for BEVs (excluding Tesla, which didn’t publish sales figures for that period last year) and 12 per cent for traditional hybrids.
The 2941 plug-in hybrids sold so far this year also trail the 9680 full EVs and 41,056 conventional hybrids delivered – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a broad array of PHEVs on sale in Australia, across 17 brands and 30 model lines.
