Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this restored 1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 two-door hardtop. The Olds is powered by a 394cid Rocket V8 bolted to a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes Coker whitewall tires, power steering, aftermarket auxiliary gauges, power brakes, and dual exhaust system. Finished in white and red over a tri-tone red/gray/ivory vinyl and cloth interior, this Super 88 comes with restoration records and a clear title in the seller’s name.
Nineteen fifty-nine was a pivotal year for General Motors. Not only was its lineup a response to Chrysler Corporation’s Forward Look, but it also was a step away from the excesses of its 1958 roster. The designs were new, fresh, and sleek. On Oldsmobile’s end, the entry-level model was Dynamic 88, with Super 88 and 98 completing the series. A 394 V8 was new for the latter two, while the Dynamic 88 continued to use the 371. The J-2 tri-carb option was cancelled.
The Polaris White (code C) and Cardinal Red (code L) exterior was restored under the prior owner’s 28-year ownership. Features include rocker moldings, driver-side mirror, antenna, and dual exhaust system with chrome tips.
Steel 15-inch wheels with polished hubcaps and trim rings are wrapped in Coker whitewall tires.
The interior is fitted with red and ivory vinyl with gray cloth upholstery for the front and rear seats. Features include power steering, heater, lap belts, push-button AM radio, and courtesy lighting.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and fuel gauge. An aftermarket gauge cluster measuring voltage, coolant temperature, and oil pressure has been added under the dash. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 79,251 miles, which the seller reports to be accurate. When sold by the original owner in 1993, the odometer read 52,358 miles.
The 315-horsepower 394 Rocket V8 is fed by a four-barrel carburetor and channels power to the rear wheels via a column-shifted four-speed Jetaway Hydra-Matic automatic.
Braking is performed by power-assisted drums. Power is funneled through a solid rear-drive axle.
