More than 6700 electric cars have been reported as sold so far this year – 65 per cent of which were Tesla Model 3 sedans, included in the official sales data for the first time.
The Tesla Model 3 has continued to dominate the electric vehicle market in Australia, accounting for almost three out of every five electric cars sold so far this year.
Data released today shows the Tesla Model 3 accounts for 65 per cent of the 6752 electric cars sold in the first three months of this year.
With 4417 vehicles reported as sold to the end of March – the first month Tesla has contributed to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS sales reports – nearly 14 times as many Tesla Model 3 sedans have reached customers this year than the second-placed electric car.
Tesla reported 12,094 vehicles as sold in Australia in 2021. If its current momentum continues, Tesla could be on track to report close to 18,000 vehicles as sold by the end of 2022, and among the country’s top-selling passenger cars.
VFACTS data shows 6752 electric cars were sold in Australia across the first quarter of 2022 (January to March), accounting for 2.6 per cent of the entire new motor vehicle market.
Excluding Tesla – which did not report sales to VFACTS last year – there were 2335 new electric cars reported as sold, an increase of 141 per cent over the same period in 2021.
Australia’s second and third best-selling electric vehicles of 2021, the MG ZS EV and Porsche Taycan, have fallen to 12th and sixth respectively – the former due to stock drying up ahead of a facelifted model’s arrival this July.
Hyundai and Kia’s hotly-anticipated dedicated electric cars, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, have recorded 133 and 141 sales so far in 2022 respectively – though they’re restricted by supply.
Hyundai says its new electric car will be released in batches, and only 500 examples of the new Kia electric car are due in Australia this year.
Volvo’s electric sister brand Polestar reported 115 cars as sold in its first month on the market – nearly triple the number of BMW i4 sedans, but well behind the Tesla Model 3 sales tally.
The two BMW i3 hatchbacks and nine Renault Kangoo ZE vans sold likely represent some of the last dealer stock remaining, before the BMW i3 is discontinued, and the Renault Kangoo ZE is replaced by an all-new model later this year.
