Alfa Romeo supercar name reportedly uncovered

The name of Italian car-maker Alfa Romeo’s upcoming supercar has reportedly been unearthed – and it could cost potential owners more than €1 million ($AU1.64 million) to buy the limited-edition model.

As reported by UK publication Autocar, an insider source claims the new Alfa Romeo supercar will be named ‘33’ – referencing the 33 Stradale sports car of the late 1960s, of which just 18 were made.

The report contradicts earlier information which suggested the new model would be called ‘6C’, which was based on Alfa Romeo’s modern 4C sports car and 8C grand touring coupe.

According to Autocar, Alfa Romeo will produce 33 examples of its new supercar with a price tag “north of €1 million ($AU1.64 million)” each.

The publication’s source also claims the new Alfa Romeo 33 supercar has a projected top speed of 333km/h, though there are no concrete details on what will power the model.

As previously reported, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has insinuated the supercar will be powered by a petrol engine rather than electric motors – supporting previous reports it will use a version of the Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 which currently powers the range-topping Giulia sedan.

In the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTV, the engine produces up to 397kW and 600Nm, though it is expected to receive a boost for the supercar.

Mr Imparato has also previously claimed Alfa Romeo was taking deposits for the 6C but expected the supercar’s limited allocation would be sold out before its unveiling.

Alfa Romeo is due to reveal the ‘33’ supercar on August 30, coinciding with this year’s Formula One Italian Grand Prix.
