Nissan’s new X-Trail has received a five-star safety rating from independent watchdog ANCAP, with its advanced safety assistance systems rated the equal second-best of any car tested.

The 2023 Nissan X-Trail has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) ahead of its arrival in showrooms in the coming weeks.

Applicable to all nine variants of the upcoming X-Trail, the fourth-generation Nissan SUV’s five-star safety rating was achieved, in part, thanks to its advanced Safety Assist technology – rated the equal second-best under ANCAP’s current assessment criteria.

The X-Trail’s safety rating is based on testing of the smaller Nissan Qashqai. ANCAP says it “was provided with technical information. and additional tests were conducted [pictured] to show that the Qashqai rating is also applicable to the X-Trail.”

The Nissan X-Trail recorded results of 91 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 90 per cent in Child Occupant Protection, 74 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 97 per cent in Safety Assist technology.

Its Safety Assist score is second only to the Tesla Model Y (98 per cent).

The Nissan X-Trail’s 91 per cent Adult Occupant Protection result is the fourth-highest score of any new car tested in 2022, partially owing to the SUV’s centre airbag which helped in the side impact, oblique pole and far-side impact tests.

For Child Occupant Protection, the new X-Trail scored 44.12 points out of 49, losing partial marks for child seat restraints, due to its lack of top tether anchor points on the optional third-row seats.
