A new variant of MG’s electric SUV has been announced with more driving range – but likely with reduced performance – for $7000 more than the standard version.

The 2023 MG ZS EV Long Range electric SUV is priced from $55,990 plus on-road costs – or $7000 more than the standard-range version – with 120 kilometres of additional claimed driving range over the standard model.

As reported by Drive in February 2023, MG is fitting the Long Range with a 72kWh battery pack – up from 50.3kWh in the standard ZS EV – providing up to 440km of claimed driving on a single charge (Europe’s WLTP test cycle).

Pricing has been announced at $55,990 before on-road costs for the 2023 MG ZS EV Essence Long Range – $7000 more than the standard-range Essence model below it, with similar standard features.

Drive-away pricing will vary between state and territory. The first examples are due next month.

Compare that to the standard ZS EV – which offers 320km of range – and is priced between $46,195 and $49,130 drive-away for the Excite trim (depending on the location).

The ZS EV Long Range now offers the same driving range as the Polestar 2, but is 51km shy of the Tesla Model 3’s 491km claimed range – both of which are priced from $63,900 and $64,300 before on-road costs respectively.

However, the Chinese-owned brand hasn’t confirmed Australia performance figures for the Long Range.

The same ZS EV Long Range also gets a 72kWh battery pack in Europe, but power is believed to have been reduced to 115kW and 280Nm from the electric motor.

Meanwhile, the standard ZS EV on sale in Australia puts out 130kW and 280Nm.

The electric SUV comes with the company’s seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and battery warranty.

The 2023 MG ZS EV Long Range is due to go on sale locally in April 2023, with deliveries expected to begin shortly after.
