Mahindra’s new XUV700 SUV has been recalled less than three months after going on sale in Australia, with a faulty wiring harness pinned as a potential fire hazard.

Mahindra has recalled 330 examples of its 2023 Mahindra XUV700, following the discovery of an engine bay electrical defect which could lead to the SUV catching fire.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the main fuse box wiring harness may come in contact with the metal engine mounting bracket.

“As a result, the wiring harness could become damaged over time due to vibrations whilst driving, thus increasing the risk of thermal incident which may lead to vehicle fire.

“A thermal incident which may lead to vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders and/or damage to property.”

Australian deliveries of the Mahindra XUV700 began in mid-June 2023, though it is not known how many examples have been sold as the car-maker’s sales data is not included in monthly VFACTS new-car sales reports.

A full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 330 vehicles involved in the recall can be found here.

Mahindra advises XUV700 owners to contact their most convenient Mahindra dealer to have the wiring repaired, free of charge.
