Hyundai’s new electric sedan has been caught with less camouflage than ever before, confirming it will retain its links with 2020’s sleek Prophecy concept.

The upcoming 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan has been spied in transit, wearing less camouflage than any prototypes before it.

Images posted to the Bobaedream‘ forum show an Ioniq 6 prototype on the back of a transporter, without the heavy black cladding affixed to test cars seen over the last six months – and confirming Hyundai’s next Ioniq family member will remain faithful to the styling of the 2020 Hyundai Prophecy concept.

While the production car’s proportions aren’t as exaggerated as those of the concept, the new Ioniq 6 will retain the Prophecy’s sloping roofline, liftback opening, sharp shoulder line and rear spoiler (which bears a faint resemblance to the ‘whale tail’ of a 1970s Porsche 911 Turbo sports car.

The production Ioniq 6’s tail-lights eschew the vertical layout of the Prophecy concept for a horizontal theme similar to the first entry in Hyundai’s new Ioniq electric car family, the Ioniq 5 SUV.

Past spy photos have shown the Prophecy’s closed-off front end and upright LED headlights will carry over in part to the production car.

Slated for reveal towards the end of 2022, the Ioniq 6 will ride on the Hyundai group’s dedicated E-GMP electric vehicle platform, and will share many of its mechanical components with the aforementioned Ioniq 5, along with its Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 siblings.

Overseas reports suggest the sedan will be tailored towards energy efficiency, with aerodynamic wheel covers, 20mm-longer bumpers – reportedly a late change, requested by Hyundai’s chairman – and a slippery body to contribute to a driving range claim in South Korea of 500km.

That exceeds the circa-430km figure posted by the Ioniq 5 in its home market, aided by a larger 77.4kWh battery shared with the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, versus the Ioniq 5’s 72.6kWh pack – though reports suggest the Hyundai SUV could gain the larger battery as part of an update within the coming months.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is expected to be revealed by the end of this year. Australian launch timing is yet to be confirmed, though using the Ioniq 5 as a guide, expect a local debut within nine months of the sedan’s global debut.
