The semiconductor shortage will hit new Spanish brand Cupra before it delivers its first car in Australia, with the Formentor SUV to miss out on a surround-view camera – though only for a few months.
The 2022 Cupra Formentor VZx will arrive in Australia in the coming months without a 360-degree camera, as initially expected – however the feature will return towards the end of this year.
The flagship Formentor VZx was initially intended to feature a 360-degree camera from launch in Australia, according to Cupra – however to keep production lines moving amid the global semiconductor shortage, this has been de-specified to a rear-view camera only.
However, Cupra Australia says this is only temporary, as the feature (badged Top View Camera in Cupra parlance) will return for Model Year 2023 – production of which will commence in late 2022, a company spokesperson told Drive.
The list price of $61,490 before on-road costs (or $66,490 drive-away) announced this morning applies to Model Year 2022 vehicles, with rear-view cameras only – and while yet to be confirmed, it’s probable prices will rise for MY23 to account for the addition of the 360-degree camera.
Model Year 2023 production will also see the introduction of towing capability on certain Formentor and Ateca variants.
