Next-generation old-school off-roader previewed in camouflaged teaser image.
Land Rover has released the first official teaser of its new-generation Defender, ahead of a full reveal sometime next year.
The above image was published on some of the company’s social channels, including its North American Instagram profile.
Accompanying the photo is the caption: “do not unwrap until 2019”, indicating the official reveal of the much-loved nameplate will occur in the new year.
It appears the boxy proportions that are a trademark of the Defender nameplate will be carried over to the new model, as will the tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
Under the skin, the Defender is expected to be based on a version of the aluminium-intensive architecture that underpins the current-generation Discovery, which should improve its on-road performance, save weight, and allow the Defender to be fitted with the latest driver assistance and active safety systems.
Despite its more modern platform, the Defender should still be a weapon off-road. It’ll likely get Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, locking differentials, and low-range gearing.
