What we don’t
  • Road noise
  • Warm cabin

So I have owned four Audis on the trot and was determined to make a change. My budget was $50K, so I was drawn to the specials on offer back in September 2020 for the BMW X1.

The dealer was great and offered me a model on the boat with the 2.0-litre engine, when I thought I’d be getting the 1.5-litre.

The car has the Sensatec fake leather, which is fine. The X1 looks great, and the ride is firm on 19-inch tyres. The tech is really good – wireless Apple CarPlay, a big 10.5-inch screen and head-up display. Visibility out of the car is good also.

The main drawbacks are its quite loud road noise at speed, the cabin doesn’t ventilate well without air-con, and it isn’t particularly economical at 10.0L/100km.

Overall, I’m happy with the vehicle. I got it at $52K on the road and five years of free servicing because of the company I work for.

Would I buy something different now? Probably not, but my next car will be electric for sure in 4–6 years.
