Evolutionary styling accompanies an all-new modular architecture

The second-generation Peugeot 208 has been spied undergoing hot weather testing in southern Europe.

Although the prototype is wearing camouflage from head to toe, it’s easy to see the new model will carry on many of the styling themes seen on today’s car, including its overall shape.

The design of rear doors also links the next-generation hatch with its 206 and 207 forebears, while the tail-light graphics tie the city hatch with other recently redesigned Peugeot vehicles, like the 3008 and 508.

We know from spy photos of an early engineering mule the new 208 will be slightly wider and ride on a longer wheelbase than today’s car.

The new 208 will be one of the first cars to be based on the company’s new Common Modular Platform (CMP), which is being developed with Dongfong, one of the PSA Group’s major shareholders and its partner in China.

This platform will also be used by the next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Corsa. The new Corsa will the first Opel/Vauxhall developed in-house by PSA after those brands were acquired from GM.

In addition to spawning a plethora of new models, including the Citroen C3 and cars specific to the Chinese market, CMP is said to support fully electric drivetrains.

Earlier this year, Jean-Pierre Imparato, head of the Peugeot brand, said the company’s strategy for electric vehicles will see it introduce electric drivetrain options on core vehicle lines, as opposed to developing and producing dedicated EV models.
